Floating Bathroom Vanities: Pros, Cons and Design Ideas
Share
Floating vanities — cabinets mounted to the wall with open space underneath — have become one of the most requested bathroom upgrades. They look modern and light, but they're not right for every bathroom. Here's what to know before you choose one.
The pros
- Makes small bathrooms feel bigger. Seeing the floor run under the vanity makes the room feel more open.
- Easier to clean. No base to mop around — you can clean right under it.
- Flexible height. Because it's wall-mounted, the vanity can be installed at the height that's most comfortable for you.
- Room for lighting. LED strip lighting underneath adds a soft, spa-like glow and works as a nightlight.
- Clean, modern look that pairs well with large-format tile and frameless glass showers.
The trade-offs
- Less storage than a full-height vanity, since there's no cabinet space down to the floor. Deep drawers and a medicine cabinet or wall shelf can make up the difference.
- Needs solid wall support. The wall behind it needs proper backing to hold the cabinet, countertop and sink — especially with a heavy stone top.
- Plumbing should be planned. Pipes are more visible from below, so the drain and supply lines may need to be positioned or covered neatly.
These are all easy to handle when they're planned from the start, which is why it helps to work through the layout with a designer before you order.
Design ideas
Natural wood warmth
Oak and walnut floating vanities bring warmth to a bathroom. Pair them with a light stone or quartz top and matte black or brass hardware for a calm, spa-like feel.
Bold color
Navy, emerald green or matte black make a floating vanity the focal point of the room. Brass or black fixtures add contrast.
Double vanity
In a primary bathroom, a long floating double vanity gives each person their own sink and drawers while keeping the room feeling open.
Under-vanity lighting
A simple LED strip underneath highlights the floor tile and makes the vanity appear to hover.
Is a floating vanity right for you?
It's a great fit if you want a modern look, have a smaller bathroom, or want easier cleaning. If you need maximum storage, a full-height vanity or a floating vanity paired with a tall linen cabinet may be the better choice.
