Shaker vs. Flat-Panel Kitchen Cabinets: Which Is Right for Your Home?
Share
Door style sets the tone for your whole kitchen. The two most popular choices today are Shaker and flat-panel (also called slab) cabinets. Both are versatile and long-lasting — the right one comes down to the look you want and how you use your kitchen.
What are Shaker cabinets?
A Shaker door is made of a frame with a recessed center panel. The design is simple and clean but adds a bit of depth and shadow, which gives it a classic, crafted feel.
Best for: traditional, transitional, coastal and farmhouse kitchens — or anyone who wants a timeless look that won't feel dated in ten years.
- Pros: extremely versatile, works with almost any countertop and hardware, looks great painted or in natural wood.
- Cons: the inside edges of the frame can collect a little dust and need an occasional wipe.
What are flat-panel cabinets?
Flat-panel doors are a single smooth surface with no frame or detail. They create a sleek, uninterrupted look and let the material — a warm wood grain, a matte color or a glossy finish — take center stage.
Best for: modern and contemporary kitchens, minimalist spaces, and homes where you want the cabinetry to feel calm and streamlined.
- Pros: very easy to clean, modern look, beautiful in wood grains like oak and walnut.
- Cons: high-gloss finishes can show fingerprints; the minimal style may feel too stark in a very traditional home.
Which costs more?
Door style usually matters less to the price than material and finish. A flat-panel door in a premium wood veneer or high-gloss lacquer can cost more than a painted Shaker door, and vice versa. If you're comparing options, ask to see the same cabinet line priced in both styles.
Can you mix both?
Absolutely, and it's one of our favorite looks. A popular approach is white or light Shaker cabinets around the perimeter with a flat-panel wood island as a warm focal point. Mixing styles works best when you keep the hardware and countertop consistent.
Quick guide
- Choose Shaker if you want a classic, flexible look that suits most South Florida homes, from coastal to traditional.
- Choose flat-panel if you love a clean, modern kitchen and want natural wood or bold color to stand out.
- Mix both if you want a custom, designer feel.
